Record where the water comes from
Take photos during or after rain from a safe location. Mark the collection area, nearby roof downspouts, higher ground and the route water currently follows. Note how long ponding remains and whether it affects a doorway, parking space or driveway entrance. Keep images tied to a marked plan so a contractor can distinguish separate low areas. These observations help a site review; they do not establish an engineered drainage design.
Identify an outlet before choosing a pipe
A drain needs somewhere appropriate to discharge. Share the locations of existing catch basins, ditches, culverts and approved connection points. Outlet elevations and permissions may determine whether a proposed system can work. A longer pipe does not solve a missing outlet or a connection that cannot be used. Where engineering or approvals are required, resolve those before committing to a construction layout.
Separate grading, structures and base problems
Surface water may call for regrading, inlet work, pipe replacement or clearing an obstruction. A soft or settled pavement area may also involve the underlying material. Ask for the observed condition and proposed work to be described separately. Avoid assuming that an overlay, drain or extra stone will address every cause. Existing structure condition, surrounding grades and available soil information help define what needs further investigation.
Coordinate the work with pavement removal
Show where drainage excavation crosses asphalt, gravel, entrances or sidewalks. Include sawcut limits, material removal, trench backfill, structure adjustments and the final pavement tie-in. Completing underground work before resurfacing can avoid reopening a new surface. If work must happen in stages, define the temporary finish and who maintains access between phases. New concrete work must be assigned separately when it is outside the sitework proposal.
Keep entrances and neighboring property in the plan
Identify accessible paths, emergency access, delivery routes and occupied entrances that must remain usable. Include property boundaries and the approved discharge arrangement. Drainage changes should be reviewed with the project designer when they affect the design or require approvals. For a shared drive or commercial property, identify the owner contact who can coordinate access and the work schedule.
