Footprint is only the beginning
A building footprint or driveway area describes the surface, not the full excavation. Depth, side slopes, working room, stripping and the finished elevation determine how much material must move. Send both existing and proposed grades when available. For a foundation, include the footing plan, basement depth and space needed by the foundation contractor. An addition beside an occupied building may need a different approach from the same excavation in open ground.
Soil affects handling and replacement
Reusable soil, wet material, rock and unsuitable fill require different handling. Share the geotechnical report, test-pit information and known fill history. Ask the estimate to identify ordinary excavation separately from undefined conditions and to explain how additional work would be measured and authorized. A soil allowance should have a stated assumption; it should not be interpreted as a verified quantity. Material acceptance and compaction requirements come from the project specifications.
Follow each load to its destination
On-site reuse, stockpiling and export each affect the equipment and trucking required. Identify the receiving location and who is responsible for acceptance and disposal fees. Imported structural fill or stone also needs purchase, delivery, placement and compaction. Keep bank, loose and compacted volumes distinct: they describe different material states. A cubic-yard quantity cannot be treated as a tonnage without a material-specific conversion.
Account for access and production
Gate width, overhead restrictions, truck turning space and staging room affect how the crew can work. Include occupied entrances, utility shutdowns and hours when deliveries are allowed. Repeated mobilizations or work around another trade may change the price even when the excavation quantity stays the same. For regional projects in Watertown, Utica, Cortland or Rochester, send the expected duration and daily work window so travel can be evaluated with the scope.
Include what happens after digging
An excavation proposal may include bedding, aggregate, drainage, backfill and surface restoration, but only the written scope establishes those responsibilities. State whether the finish is rough grade, compacted stone, topsoil or asphalt. New concrete and landscaping are separate unless expressly included. Survey, testing, utility connections and engineering also need an assigned party. These interfaces matter as much as the digging quantity when comparing totals.
Request a price you can use
Send the address, plans or measured sketch, available soil information, site photos and target dates to Shawn. Ask for a lump sum for the defined work and breakouts or unit prices for items that remain uncertain. If plans are preliminary, identify that stage so an allowance is not mistaken for a final construction price.
